5-Day Devotional: Making Sense of Our Stories Through Christ

Devotional series based on the sermon: “Jesus Makes Sense of Our Nonsense

Day 1: Your Story Was Written Before Time Began

Reading: Psalm 139:13-16; John 9:1-7

The blind man lived forty years in darkness, not as punishment, but as preparation for encountering Jesus. His entire life was ordained so that on one specific day, the works of God would be displayed. This challenges our conventional wisdom about suffering. We desperately want answers for our pain, trying to assign fault and find reasons. But God's narrative is infinitely larger than our interpretations. Your struggles are not random accidents or divine punishment. They are part of a story written before you took your first breath - a story where Jesus meets you in your need. Stop trying to make sense of everything through the lens of fault and guilt. Instead, ask: "Where is Jesus in this moment, and what glory might He reveal through my waiting?"

Day 2: Faith Is Not Something You Create

Reading: Ephesians 2:8-9; John 9:35-38

When the blind man finally saw Jesus, his response was immediate: "Lord, I believe." Faith is not intellectual achievement or personal willpower. It is a miracle worked in you by God Himself, to be specific, the Holy Spirit! The man didn't reason his way to faith; he encountered the living Christ and was transformed. Many struggle, wishing they could believe, working harder to manufacture conviction. But faith comes as a gift when Jesus reveals Himself to your heart. You cannot create it through effort or education. Open your spiritual eyes to see Jesus as He truly is: your Redeemer who knows your shame, sees your guilt, and came specifically to wash you clean. Faith happens when Christ grabs you by the spiritual throat and declares you forgiven.

Day 3: Truth Must Offend Before It Heals

Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:18-25; John 9:13-34

Jesus deliberately healed in ways that challenged religious assumptions, creating struggle and division. The Pharisees couldn't reconcile their interpretations with this miracle-working rabbi who broke their Sabbath rules. Truth is often a pebble in our shoe, a burr under our saddle. When witnessing or wrestling with spiritual realities, expect resistance in others and yourself. The gospel confronts our comfortable narratives and self-righteous systems. Don't be discouraged when people struggle with Christ's claims or when you find yourself wrestling with difficult truths. Struggle means the truth is working. The harder the battle, the deeper the eventual understanding. Once learned through struggle, spiritual truth becomes unforgettable. Be patient with those who resist. Be patient with yourself.

Day 4: It's Not About You - It's About Jesus and You

Reading: Romans 8:28-30; John 9:3-5

Our egos resist this truth: life is not primarily about our dreams, comfort, or conventional success. The blind man's entire existence served a purpose beyond his personal narrative: to reveal the glory of Christ. This doesn't diminish your worth; it establishes it. You matter infinitely because you matter to Jesus. Your life is about being saved by Him and reflecting His glory. Stop interpreting everything through the lens of your expectations and social comparisons. American dreams and Olympic victories pale before the eternal reality of knowing Christ. Your greatest moments are not measured by achievements but time with Jesus. Reevaluate your story. Where have you left Jesus out? What situations need His interpretation rather than yours? Your life is grace-time to find Christ and be found by Him.

Day 5: Grace Covers All - The Question of Fault Becomes Irrelevant

Reading: Colossians 2:13-15; John 9:39-41

The disciples asked, "Who sinned?" Jesus answered by going to the cross. When grace is lifted up on Calvary, the question of fault dissolves in the ocean of forgiveness. Yes, we are all sinners facing death and judgment. But Christ took it all: every sin, every shame, every failure. The blind man likely watched from a distance as Jesus was crucified, finally understanding the full scope of redemption. Grace covers everything. The church is not a courtroom assigning blame but a hospital dispensing healing. Stop obsessing over who's at fault for your pain. Stop carrying guilt Christ already carried. He forgave it all, rose to declare you free, and invites you to worship Him. When you truly see Jesus - crucified, risen, and returning - you find the answer to every question your heart has been asking.
