5-Day Lenten Devotional: Living in the Joy of Your Inheritance
Devotional series based on the sermon: “Joy Comes From Christ In All Circumstances”
Day 1: A New Birth into Living Hope
Reading: 1 Peter 1:3-9
God's great mercy has given you something revolutionary: a new birth. This isn't self-improvement or turning over a new leaf. It's a complete transformation of your identity. Through Christ's resurrection, you've been born into a living hope that death itself couldn't extinguish. When circumstances scream that God doesn't care, remember Peter's boat in the storm. Jesus was there all along. Your new birth means you belong to God's family, not because of your performance, but because of His love. Today, when doubt creeps in, look not at your feelings but at the cross. There Jesus proved His love definitively. You are His child, watched over and known by name.
Reflection: What circumstances are making you question God's care today? How does knowing you're "born again" change your perspective?
Day 2: An Inheritance That Cannot Fade
Reading: Romans 8:14-17; Ephesians 1:13-14
You have an inheritance kept in heaven for you. Unlike earthly possessions that rust, fade, or get buried in Cadillacs, your inheritance is imperishable. Someone had to die for you to receive it - and Jesus did. His death wasn't just payment for sin; it was the opening of heaven's treasury to you. Right now, you're living between the promise and the fulfillment. Faith allows you to "cash in" on this inheritance today through peace, purpose, and the Holy Spirit's presence. Heaven will exceed your wildest imagination. No more struggle with sin, no pain, no separation. Everything you hope for and more awaits. Live today as an heir, not as someone begging for scraps.
Reflection: How would viewing yourself as an heir of God change the way you approach today's challenges?
Day 3: Joy in the Midst of Trials
Reading: James 1:2-4; 1 Peter 1:6-7
Peter writes to suffering Christians with a startling message: rejoice. Not because suffering is good, but because God is working through it. Your trials are refining your faith like gold in fire, proving its genuineness. This doesn't mean fake happiness or denying pain. It means maintaining a deep, secret joy that knows God's love and plan supersede your circumstances. When life is hard, you can acknowledge the difficulty while simultaneously trusting God's goodness. Your lifetime of troubles is "just a little while" compared to eternity. The proven genuineness of your faith will result in praise and glory when Jesus returns. Today's trial is tomorrow's testimony of God's faithfulness.
Reflection: What trial are you facing that could be refining your faith? Can you identify any spiritual growth happening through it?
Day 4: The Father's Extravagant Welcome
Reading: Luke 15:11-32
Both sons in Jesus' parable struggled to grasp the father's love. The younger wasted his inheritance through indulgence; the older wasted it through self-righteousness. Neither lived in the joy of being the father's son. The father had to "die" to his ownership, giving everything to both sons. This is your story. Jesus died so you could receive your inheritance. You don't have to earn it through slavish obedience like the older brother, nor do you forfeit it through failure like the younger. The Father runs to meet you, restores you, and celebrates your return. Everything He has is yours. Stop living like a slave or a stranger. You're home. You're celebrated. You're loved.
Reflection: Do you relate more to the younger or older brother? How is God inviting you to simply receive His love today?
Day 5: Hope That Anchors the Soul
Reading: Hebrews 6:13-20; Romans 15:13
Hope isn't wishful thinking; it's confident expectation based on God's promises. Your hope is anchored in heaven, secured by Jesus who entered there on your behalf. This hope doesn't disappoint because God cannot lie. When everything around you shifts, your hope remains steady. You're not hoping God might love you. He proved it at the cross. You're not hoping heaven might be real. Jesus rose from the dead and ascended there. You're not hoping God might work things out. He promises to work all things for good. This hope gives you reason for joy regardless of circumstances. Today, let hope fill you with peace and power through the Holy Spirit. Your story is watched over by a Father who counts every hair on your head.
Reflection: What specific promise of God can anchor your hope today? How can you share this hope with someone who's struggling?
Closing Prayer:
Father, thank You for the new birth You've given me and the inheritance that awaits. Help me live in the joy of knowing You, regardless of my circumstances. Refine my faith through trials and keep my hope anchored in Your promises. May I extend Your extravagant love to others. In Jesus' name, Amen.
