5 Day Devotional: Keeping the Main Thing the Main Thing
Devotional series based on the sermon: “Resolve to Know Only Christ”
Day 1: The Power of Simple Gospel Truth
Reading: 1 Corinthians 2:1-5
Devotional: Paul's words remind us that the gospel's power doesn't rest in eloquent presentation but in Christ crucified. We don't need polished speeches to share Jesus, just faithful proclamation. The message itself carries divine power. When we feel inadequate to share our faith or wonder if our words matter, remember: God's Spirit works through simple testimony about Jesus. Your story of Christ's love, however humbly told, can change eternity for someone. The main thing is keeping Jesus - His death, resurrection, and love - as the main thing in every conversation about faith.
Day 2: Yesterday, Today, and Forever
Reading: Hebrews 13:8-16
Devotional: "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever." In a world of constant change (transitions in ministry, relationships, health, and circumstances), this truth anchors our souls. Pastors change, churches evolve, seasons shift, but Jesus remains constant. His love for you today is identical to His love when He died on Calvary. His promises tomorrow will be as reliable as they were to the early church. When uncertainty surrounds you, fix your eyes on the unchanging Christ. He is your stability when everything else feels unstable. Build your faith not on human leaders or circumstances, but on the eternal, unchanging Savior who holds you securely.
Day 3: Receiving with Open Hearts
Reading: 1 Thessalonians 2:13
Devotional: Faith operates like a relay race - one person extends the gospel baton, another receives it. But receiving requires an open hand and willing heart. Paul commends the Thessalonians for accepting God's Word "not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God." How do you receive Scripture? As interesting literature? Good advice? Or as the very voice of God speaking life into your soul? The greatest church isn't determined by its preacher's skill but by the congregation's hunger for God's truth. Approach every sermon, Bible study, and quiet time expecting God to speak. Open your heart wide to His transforming Word today.
Day 4: Believe in the Light
Reading: John 12:35-36, 44-46
Devotional: Jesus' urgent plea, "Believe in the light while you have the light,” carries both invitation and warning. Every moment is an opportunity to walk in His truth, to let His light guide your decisions, relationships, and priorities. But opportunities don't last forever. The time to trust Christ fully is now, not someday. What areas of your life remain in shadow, hidden from His illuminating presence? What fears, sins, or doubts do you keep from His light? As children of light, we're called to live transparently before Him, allowing His truth to expose, heal, and transform every corner of our hearts.
Day 5: Victory in Every Goodbye
Reading: 2 Timothy 4:6-8
Devotional: Every ending can be faced three ways: with hopeless sadness, with denial disguised as celebration, or with genuine victory rooted in Christ's resurrection. Paul faced his final days knowing he had "fought the good fight" and that "the crown of righteousness" awaited him. His confidence wasn't in what he accomplished but in the faithful Savior he proclaimed. When you face transitions, saying goodbye to loved ones, leaving seasons of life, or confronting your own mortality, where is your hope anchored? In Christ, every goodbye becomes a "see you later," every ending points to an eternal beginning. Live today with resurrection hope, knowing your story doesn't end at the grave.
