Day 1: The Treasure Hidden in Plain Sight
Reading: Matthew 13:44
Devotional: The man in the parable did not go looking for the treasure. He stumbled upon it. Yet the moment he recognized its worth, nothing else mattered. That is how grace often works. God finds us in the middle of ordinary life, not because we were searching perfectly, but because He was.
The question the parable leaves in your shoe is this: once you have seen what Christ offers, does your life reflect that you have found something worth everything? Examine today what you are still holding back, and ask God to deepen your understanding of what He has already given you freely.
Day 2: Sold Out for the Pearl
Reading: Matthew 13:45-46
Devotional: The merchant in this parable was a professional. He knew value. He had seen many fine pearls. But when he found the one of great price, his expertise led him to one conclusion: sell everything.
Salvation through Christ is not one good thing among many good things in your life. It is the one thing that gives every other thing its proper place. When Christ is rightly valued, family, career, accomplishment, and possessions do not disappear, they simply find their correct position beneath Him.
Ask yourself today whether the pearl of great price is truly at the center of your decisions, your time, and your affections.
Day 3: The Urgency of the Net
Reading: Matthew 13:47-50
Devotional: The dragnet parable is not offering comfort, it’s a warning. Jesus was not content to only describe the beauty of the kingdom. He also described the finality of the age. There is a day coming when opportunity ends. The patience of God in the present moment is not indifference.
As 2 Peter 3:9 reminds us, God is not slow in keeping His promises but is patient, not wanting anyone to perish. That patience has a limit set by His wisdom alone. Let this parable move you not toward fear but toward urgency, both for your own faith and for those around you who have not yet recognized the treasure.
Day 4: You Are the Treasure He Found
Reading: Romans 5:6-8
Devotional: The sermon offered a stunning reversal: what if Jesus is the man who found the treasure? What if He is the merchant who sold everything for the pearl of great price, and you are that pearl? Romans 5:6-8 confirms this. While we were still without strength, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
He did not wait for us to become valuable. He declared us valuable by what He was willing to pay. The cross is the proof of your worth in His eyes. Not worth earned by your righteousness, but worth declared by His love. Rest today in the fact that He sold out for you.
Day 5: Have You Understood These Things?
Reading: Matthew 13:51-52; Romans 7:18-25
Devotional: Jesus closed this sequence of parables with a direct question: have you understood? The word means to put things together in your heart. True understanding of the kingdom holds three things together at once: the breathtaking grace of a Savior who gave everything, the urgency of a life that will not last forever, and the honest confession that you are still a sinner who needs that Savior daily.
Like Paul in Romans 7, we do not graduate from needing the gospel. We go deeper into it. The marks of someone who has truly understood are not perfection but gratitude, humility, and a life increasingly shaped by the One who is worth everything.
