Encountering Jesus at the Shore

Devotional series based on the sermon: “Love For Christ Translates Into…”

Day 1: The Constancy of Christ's Love

Reading: John 21:1-14

Devotional: After His resurrection, Jesus didn't abandon the disciples who had abandoned Him. He met them at the familiar Sea of Galilee, doing what they knew best. When we return to our old patterns after failing God, He doesn't condemn us. Instead, He orchestrates things to remind us of His unchanging love. The miraculous catch of fish was one way of showing that. Jesus uses the familiar to draw us back to Himself. Notice that Jesus had already prepared breakfast before they arrived. He anticipated their needs and met them with hospitality. His love isn't dependent on our performance. Today, reflect on how Jesus has pursued you even after your failures. His grace is constant, weathering all our weaknesses.

Day 2: Swimming Toward Grace

Reading: Luke 5:1-11; John 21:7-8

Devotional: Peter's response reveals profound spiritual growth. At the first miraculous catch, he cried, "Depart from me, I'm a sinful man." Now, after denying Jesus three times, Peter wraps himself and jumps into the water, swimming toward Jesus rather than away. This is the transformative power of God’s grace. When we truly understand that Jesus forgives completely, we move toward Him in our shame rather than hiding. Peter had learned that Jesus' love wasn't conditional on his perfection. The cold water couldn't keep him from his Savior. What keeps you from swimming toward Jesus today? Past failures? Present struggles? Don't let shame keep you in the boat. Wrap yourself in His promises and swim to shore.

Day 3: Do You Love Me?

Reading: John 21:15-17

Devotional: Three denials. Three opportunities to affirm love. Jesus wasn't punishing Peter; He was healing him. Each "Do you love me?" gave Peter a chance to replace a painful memory with a purposeful commission. Jesus doesn't ask us to prove our love through perfect performance but through faithful service: "Feed my lambs. Take care of my sheep." Notice Jesus didn't say, "Build your reputation" or "Ensure your own comfort." He said, "Care for my people." We can demonstrate our love for Christ in how we love His church. This isn't about earning forgiveness - Peter was already forgiven. Instead we aim to redirect God’s love into purpose. When you've failed, Jesus doesn't disqualify you; He recommissions you. Jesus asking: "Do you love me?" leads us to serve others in His name.

Day 4: Finding Purpose in Pain

Reading: 2 Corinthians 1:3-7

Devotional: God wastes nothing, not even our deepest pain. Paul writes that God comforts us so we can comfort others with the same comfort we've received. Your suffering isn't random; it's preparatory. The trials you endure today equip you to minister to others tomorrow. Don’t wait until life becomes easy to serve God. Our greatest treasure isn’t our circumstances but God Himself. What pain are you carrying? How might God want to redeem it for His purposes? Your story of God's faithfulness through hardship could feed someone else's faith.

Day 5: He Was With Me Every Step

Reading: Psalm 23; Matthew 28:20

Devotional: "He was with me each step of the way." We're not promised ease, but we know that God is with us every day. Jesus told Peter he would be led to places he didn't want to go, yet Peter followed because Jesus would be there. The Good Shepherd doesn't just point the way; He walks with us through the valley. God's purpose for your life isn't primarily about your comfort but about reflecting His love to others. You have a unique calling. God has placed you exactly where you are - with your specific experiences, relationships, and opportunities - to love His people. Today, look around. Who are the sheep God has placed in your life? How can you feed them, encourage them, and point them to Jesus? Remember, wherever He leads you, He goes with you. His presence is your greatest treasure.
