James 5:10-11

Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. – James 5:10-11

Dear Jesus,

When I experience suffering it’s easy to think that you are turning your back on me.  But everyone you loved in the Bible experienced suffering.  It drew them near, taught them perseverance and grew their faith.  It also enabled them to glorify you with their faithful lives. You were loved the most by your father in heaven and you endured more than us all.  I love your word here that reminds me of all this and then says you are filled with compassion and mercy.  If I doubt your love, I will look at the cross.  I cannot deny that you love me when I see you there for me.  With that love I will settle down and face my suffering with faith. Help me glorify you with my lips and life when I am suffering.  And spare me of more suffering if it be your will.

Amen
